Frequently Asked Questions:

What is sustainable?
We have big dreams for this little farm. We would like to maximize its potential to produce nutrient-rich food for our local community. Our first priority is always be healing the soil. It is not a coincidence that over the last century, as we have seen soils around the world become depleted of nutrition and life thanks to tillage farming and the application of man-made chemicals, we have also watched the health of our own species fall apart. We alter the DNA of crops to produce pest-killing toxins because they can’t fight their own battles anymore. We prop our animals up with antibiotics so they can survive just long enough to get to slaughter. It is all tied to the health of our soil. We cannot expect our children and grandchildren, perhaps even our own generation, to be able to survive on this land if we do not begin to emphasize restoration in place of destruction.

What does soil restoration look like?
Restoration of the soil means we do not use chemicals of any kind. Nor do we plant massive monocultures of crops or confine our animals in the same place year round. As a maestro directs sections of performers to play their instruments in the right way at the proper moment, creating a beautiful work of art, we direct perennial trees, shrubs and grasses, annual vegetables, fungi, and various species of animals to behave in their own natural way in the right place and at the proper moment to create a beautiful food production ecosystem that replenishes the soil while providing humans with rich, nutritious and flavorful, health promoting food.

What about antibiotics?
Our philosophy is that antibiotics are for emergency use only. A healthy, happy animal should never need them. Our animals have quality genetics, get plenty of sunshine, and are moved to fresh forage regularly to keep them physically, emotionally, and immunologically strong. They fend off illness on their own.

Are we Organic?
Certified organic is just not good enough for us. We want to be environmentally sustainable and natural as well, producing premium quality food. We do not use chemicals or feed growth hormones. Animals that are fed grain (pigs and chickens) only receive local certified organic grain. We treat our animals well, allowing them the full expression of their respective species. In fact, we utilize their distinctive behaviors to benefit the farm in many ways. Organic certification is helpful if your food comes from large industrial farms halfway across the country, but our small size and local commitment mean you have the opportunity to meet your farmer and give your own approval of the way your food was grown.

How can you play a part?
If you are interested in the best quality food, grown sustainably, give our products a try. If you decide it’s not for you, go ahead and return to your regular food sources.  If you like it, keep coming back! But don’t stop there; tell your friends about us. Think of anyone else you know who would be interested in what we are doing and get them connected to Mid Mitten Farm!

*You have a right to know how your food is produced, and we encourage you to come out and have a look around. Maybe give yourself an extra hour or two when you pick up your meat or eggs to take a walk and see how it all works. Ask questions and voice your opinions; we’re happy to hear them.
